If you have a huge, dedicated home office, kudos. If you are like a lot of people who are forced to get creative in their bedrooms, living rooms or even a closet, however, then you’ll definitely want to use every inch of the space as efficiently as possible. To get started, consider the following strategies.

  1. Get real about what you actually need.

For many people, all a good home office really requires is a decent laptop (and maybe a printer) and somewhere to sit with it. You do NOT need eight million pens, a thousand motivational pictures and frames or a year’s worth of Post-Its to work effectively. Minimizing your tools and accessories automatically means you will have more options in terms of where to tuck a desk, and it eliminates clutter.

2. Get a desk with drawers, or utilize shelves/cabinets or stackable bins.

The minimalist look is still popular, but selecting a barely-there desk typically means you lose the chance to utilize the space under your work surface. Drawers keep the tools you really need out of sight but within reach. If drawers really aren’t an option, go vertical and install shelving above (or even below) the desk. A cabinet route can keep work items concealed if you want a more streamlined look. If you must use the desk surface for storage, go for a stacking unit.
