Imposter Syndrome Is Out of Control. Here’s Why (and How to Stop It)

I’ve had my fair share of moments where I wondered how long it would be before somebody ripped back the curtain on my incompetence or lack of fit. I imagined them, fuming and furious, spewing a series of “how dare you”s and proclaiming, “We’ve finally found you out!”

It’s classic imposter syndrome, and I’m not alone. By some estimates, such as the one from the Journal of General Internal Medicine, as much as 82 percent have experienced the fear that they will be exposed for some fault or inadequacy.

But now, some professionals, such as author and Global Courage founder Dr. Margie Warrell, assert that COVID-19 has caused imposter syndrome to increase in prevalence. The problem, Warrell argues, is that companies were forced to push many of their workers out of their comfort zone.

For some, that might have meant diving into digital transactions or working from home for the first time. For others, that might have meant adapting to new duties due to company restructures. And in the wake of employees being let go or struggling to make ends meet as they suffered through the crisis, many people reassessed their priorities, with a third of workers under 40 saying they were considering…
