One of the most common things people do in tough moments is turn on their television or a streaming service. They zone out, hoping that perhaps the mindless noise somehow will numb their exhaustion and anxiety.

But you can come away from the screen with motivation and hope, provided you choose what you watch well. Below are some of the most uplifting movies and TV scenes to inspire you, listed in ascending order of greatness.

6. A Knight’s Tale

Based on Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, this adventure-comedy follows the story of a peasant named William Thatcher (Heath Ledger). Thatcher takes up his dead master’s armor and impersonates him in hopes of winning a tournament prize. Thatcher proves his bravery over time, earns the love of loyal men, and eventually is knighted for real. He also defeats his worst foe.

The big lesson: Others might try to label you or dictate what you’re allowed to do. But don’t let anyone else define what your capabilities are or what you can achieve.
