Why “Plan It Out” Advice Only Gets You So Far
You know the saying. Fail to plan and you plan to fail.
On the one hand, there’s a lot of truth to this concept. If you only have clothes for a week and don’t leave yourself time do laundry on Saturday, for example, well, then you’re not going to have any clean undies left come Sunday morning.
But “plan it out” only goes so far.
Think first about the unpredictability of life. Even if you break down everything you want to do to the second, there’s no guarantee that funding won’t fall through, you’ll accidentally leave your phone alarm on silent and oversleep or that, quite frankly, someone else’s plan will be better than yours. After all, no one thought COVID-19 would upend everything they’d laid out, yet here we are. And although a contingency plan or two might reduce some of your risks, you simply can’t plan for every single scenario. Your only option is to look at what’s most likely to happen and acknowledge that the ability to pivot is what will keep you alive.
Secondly, last time I checked there were only 24 hours in each day. And you don’t even really have that, considering that you have to, you know, sleep, feed yourself and take care of basic hygiene needs.
